FIRE! Sizzling, hot, smoky, transformative, life-changing....Fire!

Fire is one of 4 elements that we talk about in astrology. In her book, The Missing Element: Inspiring Compassion for the Human Condition, Debra Silverman, my teacher and mentor, blends psychology and spirituality, examining the elements in depth and offering ways to embrace and make peace with ourselves so that we can become more powerful and effective human beings.

I LOVE studying the elements!

The elements - Water, Earth, Air and Fire - are an integral part of our lives. Right from the moment of conception when we grew in the watery depths of our mother's womb, to when we took our first breath at birth, to when we started to eat, cry, crawl, walk, run, talk... the elements are so much a part of our lives.

And our personality. To describe them briefly...

Air people love to talk and think. They find words easily. They enjoy watching people and asking questions. They observe and analyze people and get easily bored with people and want to move on. They will remember numbers and details but get easily distracted by things around them.

Water people cry easily. They are very sentimental and like to save sentimental objects. They won't talk if they are upset. Their body will give them an immediate gut reaction to people. Private people, they cherish their alone time. They love to listen. Music is important to them. They are prone to addiction or depression or weight issues.

Earth people use money and things to feel safe and secure. Saving money is important to them. They appear practical and grounded, thorough and deliberate. They love to eat and enjoy tastes and smells. They'll clean when they're upset.

Fire people are bold, outspoken, and frequently say things that get them in trouble. They have lots of energy and are enthusiastic and passionate. They thrive on exercise, sports, athletics. They can be loud and bossy, the life of the party, the one who will inspire others to take action. They love to laugh and find the humour in life. Anger can be an issue - their own or other's.

All 4 elements are a part of who we are, and to live happy, fulfilled lives, our elements need to be in balance.

Let's take a closer look at Fire...

Fire is the only element that gets energy from expending energy...a great way to do that is through exercise, dance, athletics, drama, music....

Fire people tend to be very independent, believing they can do everything on their own. They love change, travel, adventure. They wake up in the morning raring to go. They go, go, go ... constantly giving of themselves ... They don't have an "off" button and will continue to party and indulge when they should have stopped much earlier. They can be indulgent, confrontational, ruthlessly honest, bold, feisty, hot-tempered, inspirational, a great leader; they love life and love to be of service.

Others may find them too much to handle and so Fire people may often find themselves outside looking in. They crave attention in order to feel secure, but others may find them bossy, overpowering, not a team player, self-centered, demanding, hard to keep up with, always needing to be in charge.

Fire people need to be aware of their shadow side...being self-centered; competitive with no concern for others; anger, even rage; selfishness; the know-it-all complex; being a show-off; impatience with others. If their Fire goes out, it can lead to problems with depression, alcoholism and other addictions, obesity, anxiety, suicide.

When Fire is lacking, the humour is gone, independence is hardly experienced, and hopelessness settles in.

When there's too much Fire, the person can be self-centered, over-indulgent, fiercely independent, unable to commit, always looking for the next fun thing, even at the expense of their own health.

Fire at its best is inspirational. The leadership and friendship of the Fire person will bring out the best in others. Their love for life, their passion, their commitment to service can ignite those same qualities in the lives of people they touch. They become great role models, great teachers. Deeply spiritual, they bring wisdom, faith, hope, honesty, joy, love, and commitment to those they serve.

When my Fire is out of balance, I tend to go, go, go and don't know when to stop; hence, my late nights. I used to blame my work, my husband and my pets for all of this. My work - needing to get my marking and planning done for the next day, and to respond to teachers requesting help. I didn't want to keep them waiting. My husband - needing to make sure he had his night-time meds and was resting comfortably. My pets - making sure they made that last trip outside at night to do their business and were settled for the night. Then finally around 1 or 2 o'clock in the morning, I could sit down with a cup of tea, put my feet up and relax, watching something on T.V.

Now I no longer have my work or my husband to blame, and I'm still doing it. There's always something to do. I need to accept and realize that everything doesn't always have to be done today. I need to stop, rest, get proper sleep.

Fire at my worst...I can get depressed and just want to stay home and hibernate. My self-talk can turn negative, thinking that I am not good enough; I don't have enough; I don't know enough, so need to keep studying; I think that everything is up to me, that I am totally on my own and solely responsible; I forget my co-creative partner in Spirit. In two words...I CAN'T.

Fire at my best...I feel passionate about what I'm doing; my passion fuels my energy; I feel confident; I can inspire others, encourage and support them; I know that it's not all on me, that my Higher Power supports me and I co-create with Source. In two words...WE CAN.

If you'd like to discover more about the elements in your life, I can help. By completing Debra Silverman's Elemental Survey, we can discover your relationship to each of the 4 elements right now, at the present time. Then we can look at ways to help you balance those elements. We learn to see ourselves and others with eyes of compassion, understanding and love. What a wonderful gift! For our gift today, let's take a look at the Suit of Fire in Colette Baron-Reid's "The Good Tarot" oracle card deck.

Fire is about the energy of intention and how it creates inspired action. She says, "we relate the suit of Fire to the way we act, the results of our actions, and where our intentions could lead us if we act in accordance with them. Therefore, the Fire suit represents our passions, ambitions, and motivations turned into action. We're asked to remember that we are powerful co-creators and need to act in accordance with our deepest intentions for the highest good of all.

What actions will we take? What inspires and motivates us? What can we do for the highest good of all?

If we are creative beings, how best can we align with our Higher Power and use our connection to Spirit to co-create what serves the highest good and leads to the best outcome? How best can we use our passions to ignite positive, purposeful action and illuminate the way forward? Can we steward our power wisely? That answer is yes if you're willing to allow the Suit of Fire to reveal your co-creating partnership with Spirit."

So, I pulled a card from the Suit of Fire, asking "How best can we use our passions to ignite positive, purposeful action and illuminate the way forward?" and was gifted with...

Messenger of Fire

Determination for a new adventure, innovation, independent creative action, spirited, headstrong

"I have an unstoppable spirit and can co-create all that I desire."

"Surrounded by Spirit, illumined by the wisdom that rises up within me, I set forth on a path to innovate."

"I trust in my vision and act accordingly, remaining true to what I most value and desire, which can manifest in many forms."

So Messenger of Fire is about change. It's a call to something new and different. It's allowing that wisdom that is deep within us to arise, to rise up, and now we set forth on a path of creative action, surrounded by Spirit.

Now THAT'S exciting! Being the beginning of 2018, it will be fascinating to see where Spirit will lead us and what we are being inspired to create.

How will we choose to use our Fire? May we use it to bless others!
